Search & Ads
SEO or Google Ads: where should a small business start?
Markos Media · 28 September 2026 · 3 min read

If you want more customers to find you on Google, there are two main routes. You can pay to appear at the top with Google Ads, or earn your place in the regular results through SEO. Both work. The right place to start depends on your budget and how quickly you need results.
How Google Ads works
You choose the searches you want to appear for, write an ad and set a budget. You pay when someone clicks. A well set up campaign can bring visitors to your website within days, but the visitors stop when you stop paying. It also shows you quickly which searches lead to enquiries, which is useful even if you later move budget to SEO.
How SEO works
SEO means making your website the kind of page Google wants to show in its regular results. That includes fixing technical problems, writing clear pages that answer what people search for, and earning reviews and links from other websites. It usually takes months, but the traffic does not disappear the moment you pause.
When Google Ads makes more sense first
- •You need enquiries soon, for a launch, a new location or a seasonal offer.
- •Your website is new and unlikely to rank yet.
- •You want to test which services and searches bring the best customers.
When SEO makes more sense first
- •Your budget for ongoing ad spend is limited.
- •Customers in your field research carefully before they buy.
- •You serve a local area, where your Google Business Profile matters a great deal.
A simple way to start
- 1.Make sure your website loads quickly, works well on phones and says clearly what you do and where.
- 2.Complete your Google Business Profile with accurate details, photos and your services.
- 3.Run a small Google Ads test on the searches most likely to bring customers.
- 4.Write helpful pages for the searches that brought real enquiries.
- 5.Review the numbers every month and move budget towards what works.
Mistakes to avoid
- •Sending ad traffic to your homepage instead of a page about the service people searched for.
- •Bidding on broad searches that bring clicks but not customers.
- •Judging SEO after a few weeks, before it has had time to work.
- •Writing pages for search engines instead of for the people reading them.
- •Not tracking enquiries, so you cannot tell which channel brought the customer.
Most wasted budget comes from these mistakes, not from choosing the wrong channel.
The short version
Start with Google Ads if you need results quickly, and with SEO if you can build over time. Most growing businesses benefit from both, planned together, because the data from ads shows which pages are worth writing for SEO.
